Romans 8:15–16

15 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption to sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Reflection

Romans 8 speaks to those who belong to Christ. Paul describes the Spirit’s gift of adoption: they can approach God as Father, rather than return to the fear of slavery. This belonging is received, not earned by making ourselves impressive. Yet Paul does not promise an easy life. The chapter also speaks of suffering, waiting, and prayers too difficult to put into words. The Father’s care meets His children within that unfinished life, where the Spirit helps them in their weakness.

When fear makes prayer feel like an examination, begin simply: Father, here is what I am carrying. You do not need a polished speech. Name one concern and leave room to listen to Scripture. If someone near you feels afraid or unwelcome, offer patient attention rather than a quick answer. Sit with them, ask what they need, and help where you can. Receiving the Father’s love can teach us to make room for others with gentleness and care.
