James 1:17

17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow.

Reflection

James writes to believers facing trials and urges them to ask God for wisdom. In that setting, he names the Father as the source of every good and perfect gift. The chapter is clear that God does not tempt anyone to evil. His goodness is steady even when our circumstances shift. We can bring Him our questions without treating hardship as proof that His character has changed.

Pause tonight to notice a good gift you have received: a meal, a friend's patience, or an opportunity to begin again. Give thanks to the Father, then ask for wisdom in whatever remains difficult. Gratitude does not require pretending the difficulty is small. James also calls us to listen carefully, restrain our anger, and put the word into practice. Choose one concrete response for tomorrow: hear someone out, speak gently, or help a person in distress. Receive the Father's goodness with thanks, and let it shape the care you offer.
